MUMBAI, INDIA – This past week, the team of musicians went again and again into the slums, sharing the good news of Jesus with those they met. These are some quotes to remember from those days:
“My family would kill me if they knew I was doing this. I am in Mumbai, and I’m riding a motorcycle,” said a female volunteer, describing her ride through the streets with an Indian pastor.
“Maybe I need to read some more about Isa [Jesus],” said a Muslim man who met volunteers outside a local mosque. “Read some more?” one volunteer responded. “I have New Testaments here in my bag!”
“I am bad about discerning when the Spirit is present, but I knew without a doubt He was with us,” a female volunteer who saw incredible receptivity among women.
“And then we had chai [tea].” A volunteer after describing a conversation with an angry young man who asked, “What makes you think that you should come here when we have our own gods?” The volunteer replied, “I know it’s very confusing … but all I can tell you is that I have been following Jesus my whole life, and He has never been unfaithful.”
“We’ve been waiting for someone to share this with us,” said two elderly Indian women after hearing the Gospel of Jesus.
“I felt God say, ‘Yep. You’re an idiot,’” a male volunteer after he hit a tennis ball so hard in a game of cricket with some Indian children that the ball was lost. He replaced the ball and bought them an extra.
“They [Indians] are the model for social networking without the technology.” From a volunteer discussing how news of the team’s visit is spreading so rapidly.
“It is not that we were there today. It is that we invested in her and she is going to be there for all time,” said a female volunteer describing how a young girl shared Gospel stories with her mother after hearing the volunteers repeat them time after time.
“Just when you think it’s over, there’s more,” a volunteer describing how he shared his faith with his rickshaw driver at the end of a very long day. The rickshaw driver said, “I am very bored with my life. I hate my job. I don’t have a future. Can you help me?”
“Is it true? Is that really true?” asked a young Indian man responding to the story of the resurrection of Christ.
“It was a day of a thousand heartbreaks for me, ” said a volunteer describing a series of rejections to the Gospel, “It was too big. Too much. Too messy.”
“If all we did was plant seeds today, that’s ok. You have to get messy when you do farm work,” said a volunteer responding to the rejections of the Gospel.
“I could be in Lubbock, Texas watching TV and I’m here and frustrated that these people have not accepted the Gospel yet. God is going to do what He wants,” said a volunteer describing a series of rejections. “Not every group is going to reap the harvest. Some are going to sew in that muddy, nasty water.”
“It isn’t hard to share the Gospel in India and to get a good response. We need more harvesters,” said a volunteer.
“That’s me! I ran away from God. I came back today, and the Father loves me!” A brand new believer after hearing the story of the Prodigal Son shared with another man.
